Weekly Abysmal Video – Last Cigarette

OK…so we’re into the second month of the year and this is the first WAV.   I’ve been slacking…I’ll make it up to you, I promise!  This week’s WAV (Weekly Abysmal Video) comes to you courtesy of Dramarama from New Jersey (where they know what picante sauce is supposed to taste like).   A few years back, VH1’s irritating Bands Reunited show succeeded in bringing the band back together…a reunion that has resulted in a well-deserved second life for them with a new album in the works for 2010.

I remember hearing this song back in ’89 and loving it.  Cool band, too.  What’s really cool is that it sounds as fresh today as it did back then.   I hope you like it as much as I do.

This is an unsung classic…click the image below to watch the video and enjoy Abysmally:)

Here’s one that brings back some memories for me.  I remember Bulletboys performing this song on the short-lived ABC In Concert show back in 1991, and they really pulled it off well…harmonies and all.

The video actually avoids most of the late 80’s/early 90’s video trappings, ‘cept for that glorious backlighting which somehow works here.  And ya gotta love the stand up bass…so ridiculously out of place but showing the goofy and fun personality of the band .

I was working at my first part-time radio job when this came out and I always thought this should have been a bigger hit for Bulletboys.  It’s their re-tooling of an old Tom Waits song, Hang on St. Christopher, and it stands to this day as my favorite cover version ever.

Enjoy Abysmally.

This week’s WAV comes from Louisiana’s own Rock-N-Roll-Is-Not-A-Spectator-Sport institution…Cowboy Mouth! This is a song of theirs from the mid-90’s that shoulda been huge…it’s a definite crowd fave at their live shows. If you ever get the chance to see them live, don’t miss them…they’re one of the most fun live bands you’ll ever see!

Excellent band, cool songs and Fred Leblanc is the only drummer I’ve ever seen who can truly FRONT a band.

Just click on the Cowboy Mouth picture below and enjoy the song and video on YouTube. Here ya go…enjoy Abysmally.

To celebrate one of my music heroes, David Freel, becoming a fan of the Sonic Abyss on Facebook, this week’s WAV is from his band, and one of my 3 all-time favorite bands…Swell!

This is one of my 2 favorite songs of theirs and comes from Too Many Days Without Thinking, which is one of the 10 Most Truly Abysmal CD’s.  It’s called (I Know) The Trip and I hope you love it as much as I do.  Here’s to you, David!  And as always, enjoy Abysmally…

This week’s WAV comes courtesy of Britain’s Invasion.  I know absolutely nothing else about this band other than Dr. Chado posted this video on his Facebook wall Friday and I can’t get the song out of my head.  I wasn’t sure what to make of it at first, but after watching/listening to it about 20 times over the weekend I can’t deny I think it’s really cool.  A new kind of power trio…and girl knows she can sing.  Extra points for the guitarist’s Sleep t-shirt.  Rock on…and enjoy Abysmally…

This week’s WAV is from Texas’ own Toadies!  I was fortunate enough to see them open for Bush back in the 90’s when they were touring the Rubberneck CD…the CD this tune comes from. Great band and I highly recommend any of their 3 studio CD’s.

I know, I know…there’s no video for this song, but it’s cool, it rocks and it’s Toadies. Enjoy Abysmally…

To celebrate Stick guitarist Mike Tobin’s recent visit to The Sonic Abyss (thanks bro…you’re always welcome here!), this week’s WAV comes from Lawrence, Kansas’ own Stick with “No Groovy.”

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find an actual video for this song, but hey…it still rocks and it’s a nice way to kick off your week! I hope you enjoy it…Abysmally, of course. Cheers!

Being a sucker for good power-pop, I always loved this band. Very very short lived, but man they had some great songs. Saw them on the Spilt Milk tour at the Varsity in Baton Rouge back in the day and they were a great live band. From San Francisco, CA (retroactively)…it’s Jellyfish! Enjoy Abysmally…

This week’s WAV comes courtesy of Birmingham, AL rockers Brother Cane.

At a time (i.e. the 1990’s) when alternative and grunge were king, these guys had the guts to serve up a hot slab of home cooked rock n roll. Sounds just as great today as it did back then…maybe even better.

The soul and energy in this song is just off the hook…I still have the glass slide lead singer/guitarist Damon Johnson gave to me when they were touring the Seeds CD. As always, Enjoy Abysmally…

saga
This Canuck band made a brief splash in the US here in 1981 – 1982 with the Rupert Hine produced album Worlds Apart, and this week’s WAV is one of the first videos ever to be featured on MTV when it was a brand new video music channel.

I remember a radio station in Lafayette, LA back in the early 80’s called KSMB-FM. For about 2 years it might have been my favorite radio station ever. Whenever I was home sick from school, I had that station playing all day and in any given hour you’d hear KISS, Cindy Lauper, Ozzy Osbourne, Stevie Nicks, Police, Accept, Michael Jackson (Thriller was brand new), Yes, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith…I’ve never heard another station like it. It was all over the place and somehow it worked. That is where I first heard this song, and oddly enough I never saw the video on MTV myself back in the day.

Great song…And don’t it look soooooooooo 80’s?! And what’s up with singer Michael Sadler’s clothes. Oh yeah…it was the 80’s!
